May 23, 2023Fredericton High School visits Hayes Farms
The Centre of Excellence for Health and ASD-W Experiential Learning coordinators were thrilled to help organize a visit with Fredericton High School students to Hayes Farm in Fredericton. Students who were in Will Milner’s Nutrition and Healthy Living classes learned about local, regenerative farming and how Hayes Farm fits into the local supply chain. Students toured the farm and participated in maintenance and prep work, which included weeding, spreading wood chips, and cutting back crops to be turned into soil.
Hayes Farm is an organization whose purpose is to grow food, grow minds and grow communities. Their goal is to make a positive impact in a small way on the environment, the food system and the health of the community. The interactions Fredericton High School students received at Hayes Farm had a positive influence on them as they were able to witness how much thought and effort goes into producing food.
Students were excited to see and experience how food originates. The trip was eye-opening, and being outside the regular classroom environment created more focus for hands-on learning, as well as being able to recognize the hard work of the farmers at Hayes Farm. They appreciated seeing how intentional and purposeful each aspect of the farm is- everything serves a purpose and operates as a living system.
